Carolyn’s Story
The Sirker School is the dream of Dr. Nour and Carolyn Sirker (Carolina in Spanish). On a visit to a home in the Nejapa region on the edges of Managua, Nicaragua, Carolyn found children all alone. The children were starving and malnourished because the family didn’t have enough money to supply their basic needs. This was not an uncommon scenario in this neighborhood. In an instant, Carolyn knew what she wanted to do.
Carolyn had a grand idea to start a preschool for the children in Nejapa so that they would have a place to go during the day to learn, to eat a healthy snack, and to receive lessons and morals from the Christian faith. While Dr. Sirker led the nearby Samaritano medical clinic, Carolyn worked to create a preschool in one of the clinic’s buildings.
The preschool, named Samuelito (Little Samuel), started with 19 little students in 2005.
The school continued to grow and moved to its present location down the dirt road a mile deeper into Nejapa. Volunteer work teams from Texas, Ohio, Missouri, North Carolina, Florida and many other states helped to build bright new classrooms and the school began adding one class a year until it had a complete curriculum program from preschool through high school.
Even though the school is located in one of the most impoverished barrios in Nicaragua, the educational opportunity is among the best with computer classes, a library, arts and music programs, language lessons and professional career training.
In 2011, the school was renamed Carolina de Sirker Christian School in the midst of Carolyn’s battle with cancer. When she passed away in May 2013, thousands of people gathered on the school grounds to honor her legacy.
Today, we continue to be a living testimony of service, love, dedication, and perseverance of Carolina de Sirker.
In 2020, the Carolina de Sirker Christian School celebrated 15 years of its founding.
